The impact of Jacob Markstrom being traded to the New Jersey for the HABS

First of all I like to thank Martine McGuire very much for informing me of the trade as it impact the HABS with with the Devils when they traded goaler Jake Allen to the Devils on March 8,2024. A tip of my hat to you Martine

I won’t go into details of the trade sending Jacob Markstrom to the New Jersey Devils from the Calgary Flames, but just focus on the impact it has on the HABS,

When the HABS traded Jake Allen to the New Jerrsey Devils on 8,2024 they got a Conditional 3rd round draft pick for 2025,That third round draft can become a 2nd round draft pick in 2025 if the conditions are made they are as follows.

Conditions:

Upgrades to 2025 2nd round pick if Allen plays in 40 or more 2024-25 games and if the club that Allen is a member of qualifies for the playoffs in 2024-25.

Depending on how many games Jacob Markstrom plays could cut into how many games Jake Allen gets into.

HABS GM Kent Hughes can do nothing to stop the Devils from making player moves if it means it will mean the HABS get the 3rd round draft pick instead of the 2nd he would want,.

When the trade was made GM Hughes knew the Devils can make other player moves that can impact what draft pick the HABS acquire. The HABS traded Jake Allen to the Devils as they wanted to stop carrying three goalers on their roster. All three goalers did have to clear waivers to assigned to the Laval Rocket of the AHL and we all know the likely hood of the happening where none someone would have claimed whatever goaler was waivers and the HABS would have had no return on their asset , so Hughes made the best deal possible.

One of the greatest goaltenders to ever strap on a pair of leg pads is celebrating another trip around the sun today (52), born on this day , May 6th, 1972

He played 22 seasons in the NHL and won the Calder Trophy , 4 Vezina Trophies and 3 Stanley Cups with the New Jersey Devils

Photos below Marty Brodeur with trophies

Brodeur ranks as the leagues all-time regular season leader in wins (691) , shutouts (125) , games played (1,266) and goals scored (3)

He won at least 30 games in 12 straight seasons between 1995-96 and 2007-08 and is the only goalie in NHL history with 8 , 40-win seasons

He has the most postseason shutouts in league history (24) and is ranked 2nd all-time in playoff wins (113) and games played (205)

He celebrated his 40th birthday on May 6th, 2012 by beating the Philadelphia Flyers 4-2 in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals

Not only did he become the oldest goaltender to start a playoff game on his birthday , but he also became the only goaltender to play in a postseason both as a teenager and a 40-year-old.

Drafted out of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League by the Devils with the 20th pick in the 1990 draft, Brodeur made his NHL debut on March 26, 1992, with 24 saves in a 4-2 win over Boston.

I would like to thank two ladies for all their help. First, Judy Pitcher for editing this and all my other articles, adding or updating information between the time I write the article and it’s being published. I would also like to thank Martine McGuire who messaged me as soon as she heard this trade was going to happen. She also does many other things behind the scenes, as well. A tip of my hat to both Judy and Martine, you can never be replaced.

I’m not surprised that Jake Allen was traded. It’s not ideal for a team to carry three goaltenders at the NHL level, as they aren’t able to play on a regular rotation in meaningful games. A goalie can’t stay sharp and game ready, practices are not the same as game action. Carrying 3 goaltenders also takes away a spot on the 23-man roster for a positional player.

The New Jersey Devils were on Jake Allen’s “no trade” list, which he waived in order to make this trade happen.

What does surprise me is the return the HABS got for trading him .

The HABS get a 3rd round pick in the 2025 draft, which can become a 2nd round pick provided Allen plays 40 games for the Devils between now and the end of the 2024-25 season. The HABS will retain 50% of Allen’s salary this season and next. The HABS will have room in the salary retention spots, as Karl Alzner’s Buyout finally comes off the books on July 1, 2024.

This trade gives the Devils a veteran goaltender, who can be a starter or a back-up, as needed. This will also give the Devils the chance to send their young goalies back to the AHL to continue their development. Allen will now have a chance to meet and play with his new team prior to the start of the playoffs. This also gives the Devils time to get ready for next season knowing they have a veteran goaltender.

Overall, I feel this trade will help both the HABS and the Devils.

In closing Judy, Martine and I would like to wish Jake Allen all the best with the Devils and thank him for all he did for the HABS for the last 4 years. We couldn’t have had a better human as a team mate and to back up Carey Price.
